The Story Behind Sagar

The story of Hotel Sagar began in the 1960s with a small roadside shop at 11th Mile, Kunnamangalam. It served simple, homemade meals to truck drivers visiting the nearby Gwalior Rayons factory. This was the beginning of Hamza Haji’s journey in food.

The food soon gained popularity. In 1975, Hamza took over the Republic Hotel in Kunnamangalam and renamed it, taking his signature flavours to a wider audience.

In 1978, years of experience, perfected recipes and a passion for food came together with the birth of Hotel Sagar in the heart of Calicut.

Sagar soon became a destination for travellers from across South India, pioneering the idea of bringing authentic, home-style cooking into the restaurant experience.

An important part of this journey was Umayya, Hamza Haji’s wife, whose support and contribution helped shape the family, food culture and warmth that became part of Sagar’s foundation.

At its heart, Sagar was built on one simple idea:

Bringing the food of a home kitchen to the table.
