The Sagar Saga

From a humble roadside dhaba in 1956 to Kozhikode’s dining landmark since 1978.

In 1956, Mr. Hamza Haji began his journey with a small roadside dhaba at Pathinonnam Mile. That journey continued with the founding of Hotel Parivar in 1972, before Hotel Sagar opened its doors in 1978, redefining Kozhikode’s dining scene. He brought the familiar, home-style flavours of Malabar to the restaurant table, creating a menu rooted in tradition and shaped by generations of cooking. From our iconic wood-fired Malabari Dum Biryani to our famous spring chicken fry and coastal fish curries, our kitchen has remained grounded in traditional techniques and hand-pounded masalas.

Located near the KSRTC bus stand under our signature pagoda roof, Sagar isn't just a place to eat, it’s where generations of families have gathered to create lifelong memories.

Porotta & Beef vs Porotta & Fish. Which is preferred by South India?

In South India’s food culture, few debates are as deliciously divisive as Porotta & Beef vs Porotta & Fish. On one side is the iconic, indulgent pairing of flaky porotta with rich, spicy beef curry, often called the unofficial “state dish.” On the other is the coastal classic: porotta with fish curry, lighter, tangier, and deeply rooted in South India’s coastal food culture.
